Frome with a view! Screen 5

a virtual tour of Frome
On these pages of Fromeservice you can take a virtual tour of Frome. This is a series of photos to show you what a lovely place Frome is.

These images will take a normal modem about 10 to 15 seconds to load so we'll put a bit of text between each image so that by the time your PC has downloaded the image you'll be ready to see it!!

So sit back and enjoy the tour...

Stony Street, Catherine's Hill
Stony Street is to be found off Market Place at the bottom of Bath Street. This is an ancient street which was once full of shops but has been finding life pretty tough over the last few years. The cobbles and the medieval buildings provide this street with great atmosphere and this continues up St Catherine's Hill where every year a medieval street fair is held complete with town crier and medieval costumes.

Catherine Street is a very atmospheric shopping street with some newish upmarket shops including a shoe shop, goldsmith, flower shop, games, shop and so on. This is definitely one of the places to look for something different for a Christmas or Birthday gift. There is also a cafe, fancy dress hire, bead shop (yes it sells beads!) etc.

There are some marvellous shops in this street and they are well worth the climb up the hill (or the walk down!). Perhaps the hill itself explains the decline of this fascinating street. At one point there was a crazy plan to develop and build a furnicular railway to carry tourists and shoppers up and down the hill...!! Maybe people nowadays are too used to arriving in a car, walking a few feet into a large shopping mall or supermarket, perhaps we are too spoilt?

St. Catherine's Hill deserves to be successful as it is very picturesque and on a warm summer day you feel like you are in Tuscany or Provence rather than Somerset!
