Music in Frome
Frome
is the home of some very talented musicians and there are some great
gigs to be enjoyed in the town.
For young
bands starting out there are venues like The Wheatsheaves Inn and Tarvern
(01373 452000) in Bath Street which has been re-furbished and now includes
live music and an internet cafe.
Bands
play at the Merlin, and the Memorial theatre as well as The Cheese and
Grain, now one of the major venues in the area.
When
you next get a chance to see the legendary Pee Wee Ellis, he
is certainly worth seeing. Pee Wee has been known to play sax with Van
Morrison (Some of Pee Wee's CD's are listed on our product
page)
Frome
gets its fair share of 'tribute' bands and these can be a really great
evening out. Each year there are tributes to Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Jimi
Hendrix, Abba, The Carpenters, The Rolling Stones, Queen and The Beatles.
But we've
also have real bands. Rick Wakeman has played here. We've had the Manfreds,
The Commitments, Dr Feelgood, Steve Harley (twice), Wishbone Ash (almost
every year!) and so on.
There
are three main venues for this sort of band, The Merlin Theatre, The
Memorial Theatre and The Cheese & Grain (a much better venue than the
local nickname of "cheesy groin" would have you believe!) The Merlin
tends to be rather more of a theatrical place with excellent facilities
- try their website to see what's on: Merlin
Theatre
the Memorial
theatre has a more traditional music hall atmosphere which can work well
with some bands. It is quite intimate and is run by enthusastic volunteers.
See the Memorial theatre website
The Cheese
& Grain is a large venue which is incredibly flexible and has markets
and shows of all sorts. It has recently been re-sound-proofed as the
neighbours were complaining about some of the louder bands. It is now
a top venue in the south-west and Frome is incredibly lucky to have
such a facility. If you live locally make sure you keep an eye on what
is on at the Cheese & Grain and get down there for a great evening's
entertainment. See the Cheese
& Grain website
Very near
Frome is a little village called Nunney.
At Nunney on the first Sunday of the month they hold a Jazz Cafe featuring
fun and entertainment, hot music, poetry etc. Click here to find out
more: Nunney Jazz Cafe At
this site you can see the forthcoming music programme of events and
even download some hot sounds!
Of course
some local pubs have live bands playing and you should have a look at
The Wheatsheaves Inn and Tarvern at 23 Bath Street Tel: 01373 452000.
